The Barn Star Guest Cottage is tucked on the edge of an expansive valley and surrounded by National Forest and the Falls Creek Archaeological/Recreational Area. Thousands of acres of the San Juan National Forest surround the property. "Hanging" or "Hidden Valley" as it's commonly referred to, offers summer and winter recreational activities like hiking, biking, rock climbing, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing. And the Barn Star offers an amazing location, spectacular views, and serenity – all within a 10-minute drive to Downtown Durango with its wonderful restaurants, breweries, and shopping.
The rental cottage is 400 square feet on the upper level of the stand-alone cabin (the downstairs portion is not occupied and is used as storage and occasionally as studio space by the owner). The space is studio-style with the kitchen, bedroom, and seating areas sharing one large room. There is designated parking next to the cabin entry also at the same level making it easily "accessible".
The cottage is appointed with fun colors, updated vintage touches, and art & accessories. There is a hotel-quality queen-size bed with a down comforter and organic cotton sheets, a kitchenette with quality appliances, cookware, utensils, and a full-sized refrigerator. The full bath has a tub/shower combination, a marble-topped vanity, and terrific views. There is a Smart TV so you can access your Netflix and Amazon Video queues as well as dedicated Wi-Fi for the cabin. And in the winter, the propane cast-iron stove provides your on-demand heat and added ambiance.
Outside there is a seating area that invites you to enjoy the views and the peace & quiet. It's not unusual to see elk, deer, bears, and coyote in the meadow. And if you're a bird-watcher you'll see hawks, vultures, and eagles soaring along the ridge lines to the east and west. A short hike takes you to an overlook of the Animas River and valley.
Well-behaved, spayed/neutered dogs over the age of 1 year are welcome at the Barn Star - kindly review the requirements for visiting with your dog in the terms and conditions of renting and mention the size and breed of your dog(s) in your reservation request. Visiting dogs should be kept under your control while on the property, either by voice control or on a leash. Directly across the road are hundreds of acres where your furry friend can run free. Loaner crates are available for when you need to leave your pooch at home (for short periods please) - please advise the owner if you need a crate when you submit your reservation request. Additionally, bowls, towels, brushes, cookies, and waste bags are provided. There is a 2 dog maximum. *When checking rental availability, be sure to check that you are traveling with your pet to calculate the proper fees.
In addition to the activities right out the front door, the cabin is a short drive to the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway and the Animas River. Mesa Verde is a great day trip as well as the mining town of Silverton, and Pagosa Springs with its famous hot springs. The ski town of Telluride is a beautiful 2-hour trip through some of the best Aspen stands in the state - if you are visiting in the fall season, the colors there will not disappoint. And Purgatory Ski Resort is 30 minutes up the highway offering both winter and summer activities.
