The space
Welcome to our large private waterfront house in Shirley! We are halfway between Victoria and Port Renfrew along the West Coast Road, close to many parks and wilderness. It is a steep one acre property, bordered by trees with a creek, with a stairway down to a waterfront viewing area on top of a rock. Besides the neighbourhood eagles, owls, hummingbirds and other bird species, you can commonly view otters, seals, seal lions, and rarely the occasional orca pod going by on the water. Humpbacks can be seen during the migration seasons further out in the strait. The path you can see in the grass at the top of the rock at the water is from otters - they have dens near the creek. If you are adventurous and athletic, you can venture down to the water following their path (use at your own risk, and not recommended generally - Flea Beach is nearby and easily accessible)
There is a fenced garden, firepit, BBQ and hot tub area near the house, so there is a safe place for sitting outside and for children to play with supervision. Garbage should never be put outside, it is locked in the garage (key available to guests) because we have had bears in our area and are discouraging all attractants.
Even though we are remote, we have an excellent coffee shop, Shirley Delicious, and a wood fired pizza place, Stoked Pizza, which also sells licensed beverages. Besides that, you need to get supplies and gas in Sooke, as there are no other grocery stores or gas stations until Port Renfrew.
Our weather is west coast weather! That means - cooler than Victoria, more moist, often with early morning fog in summer and in the fall, more rain. Bring a sweater and light jacket, even in summer, and rain gear in the fall and winter. Storms start usually in November, which is why we have a wood burning stove - for cooking and heating during power outages. (and a generator to keep some power and internet on). Stormy season is when surf is up and surfers are out at Jordan River, Sombrio and other west coast beaches. Every season has its own attractions in Shirley - from the clear summer nights watching the Milky Way overhead in the hot tub, the hummingbirds and robins in the garden, to the winter quiet with a cozy fire inside and walks along beaches full of surfers riding the waves. It is so quiet and dark at night that you may just have the best sleep of your life!
