Climb 14 stone steps (not to be climbed alone by small children) and you’ll find a small raised terrace with some of the most fantastic views towards the nearby mountain range, with Trawsfynydd Lake visible in the distance. Sitting in the crook between Moelwyn, Arenig and Rhinog mountain ranges, and a stone’s throw from Trawsfynydd Lake, Little Cottage is a fantastic spot for taking in all that North Wales has to offer. The village of Trawsfynydd has a Post office, two small shops, a pub, with larger supermarkets a 20 minute drive away in Blaenau Ffestiniog or Porthmadog.
It is the birthplace and hometown of famous welsh poet Hedd Wyn, who was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. He won the Bardic chair posthumously for his poem yr Arwr, or The Hero, and his work was based around the themes of being a young man growing up in North Wales, and, notably, being sent away during the first World War and the effects on young people and the communities that lost them. His house is now a museum where the Black Chair can be seen today.
Trawsfynydd Lake is a fantastic place for watersports and fishing. There is an 8-mile circular walk around the lake which is suitable for bikes and pushchairs, and there are many beautiful viewpoints for family picnics.
On an isolated slope near the lake sits Tomen y Mur, a first century AD Roman Fort built by Governer Julius Agricola as an outpost in 78 AD. It is also the site of Welsh Mythology; Blodeuwedd was kept in this castle, so legend tells, before she became the Princess of Flowers for murdering her husband Lleu to be with her lover, Gronw. Many of the lakes and stunning vantage points around this area are named after the heroes and villains of the old Celtic tales.
From Little Cottage, you’re a mere half an hour’s drive to the coast, with Ceredigion bay and the Llyn Peninsula both within close reach. Take in the gorgeous views from the headland above Black Rock Sands, a sweeping stretch with views for miles around. Barmouth is the nearest bucket and spade beach destination, perfect for a family seaside day out. An hour’s drive takes you to the quiet, white sands of Traeth Porthor, arguably the best beach on the Llyn Peninsula.
For cyclists, Coed y Brenin Forest Park offers some of the most impressive and challenging bike trails in the UK. If you don’t want to carry your bike all the way here, they offer bike hire, and there’s an excellent cafe for refreshments. If you’re more of a hiker, then the Sheep Walk in Snowdonia is an unforgettable trail, but this is hiking territory and the nearby mountain ranges will offer less taxing routes for equally as impressive scenery.
For thrill-seeking families, Zip World is 20 minutes away in Blaenau Ffestiniog, with Europe’s longest zip lines and underground trampolines. This fantastic activity centre, based in an old slate mine, offers hours of fun for both adults and children.
