The perfect getaway - Bwthyn Gwennol (translated from Welsh into "Swallow Cottage" after the swallows that nest in the area every summer) is a recently refurbished two-bedroom cottage in the peaceful hamlet of Pentrebach on the edge of the Brecon Beacons just off of a country lane 3 miles north of the A40. The cottage was rebuilt from an original byre in 2005 and the stone and timbers were re-used in the rebuilding. The cottage has been recently refurbished and redecorated.
Sleeping four it is a cosy and comfortable cottage, mixing contemporary with classic styles with many character features including oak beams, stone floors, hand-made oak kitchen all topped off with a tastefully coordinated Farrow & Ball and Little Greene painted colour scheme. All rooms are fully furnished with a mix of vintage and contemporary furniture, including sumptuous Tetrad sofas, and dotted throughout are artwork and ornaments some from local artists and some from the owners’ own giftware range to make you feel at home. Underfloor heating throughout and a wood burning stove in the lounge ensure it is cosy in winter and the stone walls and limestone & travertine flooring mean it stays cool in the summer months.
To ‘show’ you around…
The front-door approached along a private dry-stone-walled pathway has a key-lock-safe (details sent prior to arrival) if we are not around to welcome you.
The enclosed outer porch is perfect for storing coats, shoes, boots and pet paraphernalia – it is heated so great for airing outdoor clothes as well as drying off damp dogs!
The kitchen is fully equipped for all your wining and dining needs with a range of equipment for snacking & nibbles through to cooking a roast & baking a cake! All the expected appliances; kettle, toaster, microwave, coffee-machine etc are available along with electric oven & halogen hob, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. A welcome pack with a few essentials to get you started will be found on the kitchen table along with the ‘Bwthyn Book’ which covers all the information, from essential to trivial, you may need during your stay.
The lounge-diner has a dining table to seat four (NB there is a high-chair available for little people – along with toddler-friendly crockery, cups etc) with French doors opening out into the terrace. The lounge has 2 comfy Tetrad sofas with throws, flat-screen TV, free-view SKY box and DVD player. There is a broad selection of DVDs, along with board games and plenty of books suitable for all. We try to be as ‘green’ as we can regarding our cleaning products using Ecover and Method and local company Myddfai’s environmentally friendly hand-wash and lotion.
There is unlimited WiFi throughout the cottage and plenty of spaces to set up a lap-top if you absolutely have to!
Pentrebach is in sheep-farming country, so is a working wilderness. There are wonderful walks from the door taking you up into the hills with breathtaking views across to the Brecon Beacons and the 40 mile circular Epynt Way walking, horse-riding and cycle trail is at the top of the valley.
The village is lucky to have retained its local pub - the Shoemakers Arms - in fact the villagers co-own it to ensure its perpetuity! As a traditional community the village has numerous events throughout the year, for example; Sports Day (August Bank Holiday), Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve party to which guests are more the welcome to attend! The pub has a reputation for good, hearty food, at a reasonable price. Please check website for opening times, as they do vary - especially during the winter, and it’s always best to book a table on the weekends as it does get busy.
NB As there are livestock in the fields surrounding the property please ensure dogs are on a lead/under control at all times.
Sennybridge (3 miles away) is the nearest place for provisions and has several garages with well-stocked grocery stores attached, a post office and a handful of pubs.
Heading east…
Brecon is the closest town with a mixture of a few chains and independent shops, lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants, a leisure centre, cinema, theatre, cathedral, as well as several museums plus canal and river walks. ‘Brecon Jazz’ is a highlight of the annual calendar taking place in August.
Slightly further afield there is Hay-on-Wye – the world-famous book town with dozens of book shops, independent stores and plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants and of course the famous Hay Festival which takes place in May every year.
Further east, but well within striking distance, are the towns of Crickhowell, lots of boutique shops, cafes, bars & castle and Abergavenny, the ‘gate-way to the Beacons’ with its fabulous food festival every September.
Go west…
Llandovery is a typical west Wales market town with lots of independent shops and eateries as well as the ruins of Llandovery castle with the striking statue of Llywelyn standing guard.
A little further on is the popular market town of Llandeilo with lots more independent stores including a Ginhaus and branch of Toast!
And, of course, Cardiff and Swansea are both under an hour away if you need a city fix!
There is ample walking in every direction; the popular peaks in the eastern Beacons around the Pen y Fan range and further to the Black Mountains, the quieter western Beacons and Carmarthen Fans, the Swansea valley cave & waterfall country to the south and to the north the wilds of the Epynt Way into mid-Wales and beyond.
The area is great for other activities too; bird-watching (see Red Kites circling overhead from the garden – the record we’ve seen is 19 in the sky all at the same time!), fishing (famous fishing rivers the Usk, Towy and Wye are all within 40 minutes drive – the river Usk is only 3 miles away), cycling (bike hire available in Brecon), pony trekking, kayaking, climbing, sailing and golf (Cradoc golf club is only 8 miles away) are all within the local area.
And if all of the above doesn't wear you out during the day, at night why not try a little star-gazing ? The Brecon Beacons National Park became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012 and there are some great spots we can recommend on a clear, starry, starry night to wish upon a star or two trillion...

Summary: The cottage is extremely well equipped with all the home from home comforts. There are plenty of blankets and extra duvets should these be necessary and the kitchen has everything you could possibly need, including a coffee maker. The bathroom is beautifully appointed with a powerful shower and an endless supply of hot water. We were so pleased with the cleanliness on our arrival and found the cottage to be warm and cosy with underfloor heating and the option of a wood burner. Arrival instructions were very detailed and easy to follow. Our dog thoroughly enjoyed the enclosed garden and the walks we could follow from the door. We had an evening meal at the pub, just a few doors down the road which we would recommend wholeheartedly. We loved the peace and quiet of the hamlet in which the cottage is situated. Communication with the host, Jenny was superb - thank you Jenny for having us to stay!
