Positive: The location was beautiful- one minute from the sea and with lovely views of the mountains behind. It was lovely to have the quiet and privacy of a self-contained unit. Milatos is a tiny village with no public transport and just a handful of small tavernas overlooking the water (it is a pebbly beach). Really good for a quiet, low-key stay, kept cool by the winds even in August. The garden furniture was really useful- nice and light and allowed us to sit outside a lot in the mornings and evenings. Stunning sunsets over the bay.
Negative: We were two friends travelling together and needing separate rooms. The bedrooms are very unequal sizes and only one of them has air conditioning. The place purportedly hosts 5 people but more than 3 would be very squashed indeed, and the bathroom is absolutely tiny. We are average size (not big) women and could only just squeeze into the shower. To wash our hair we had to stand outside the shower and lean in because it was too small to lift our hands above our heads! The property is generally well-equipped with facilities but it would have been nice to have some basics e.g. a pack of coffee for the coffee machine, a few more toilet rolls, and some salt, pepper, olive oil. There is only one shop in the village and it is annoying to have to pay their very steep prices for things when you really want just a pinch of salt and sprinkle of pepper, or a couple of extra toilet rolls to last the trip. A bit more information in the booklet would be useful too- for example no one drinks tap water in Crete as it is not safe, yet if we did not have friends there we would not have known this. The blurb about the property made a lot of its green credentials but there was nowhere to recycle all the plastic bottles, and no info on what to do with rubbish generally.
